It's a New Year. New Vaccine. New goals and time to turn on the sunshine!
Pantone announced that it had chosen two colours of the year 2021; Ultimate Gray and Illuminating, a combination of dull, familiar grey and the bright yellow of a lemon skin. It's a choice for the past year of quarantine, a time in which we had to insulate ourselves from the world and curl up in our blankets at home.
If ever there was a time to look on the bright side, we are here. In a time of economic uncertainty and political change, optimism is paramount and no other colour expresses hope and reassurance more than yellow.
Yellow is the colour most associated with happiness and adds a joyous, expansive and welcoming touch to any interior. True, that pessimists may hold a more accurate version of reality, but right now we all need the lift of optimism and how better to turn your optimism then with a window to the sunny side of the colour wheel.
The 2021 colours reflects what is taking place in our global culture, expressing what people are looking for that colour can hope to answer, explains Laurie Pressman, Vice President of the Pantone Colour Institute.
Illuminating is a bright and cheerful yellow sparkling with vivacity; it's a warming yellow shade imbued with solar power.
Meanwhile the second tone Ultimate Grey is emblematic of solid and dependable elements which are everlasting and provide a firm foundation. The colours of pebbles on the beach and natural elements whose weathered appearance highlights an ability to stand the test of time, It encourages feelings of composure, steadiness and resilience.
Yellow is the perfect accent colour for a bright and bold update to your interior, but you also use this well for an outdoor area.
It comes in many shades from bright sunny to a pastel or neon, to a more muted mustard tone.
But remember 'The Colour of the Year' is meant as a trend forecast only. An evidence based finding on which hues are newly popular, this years pick seem clearly metaphorical, more of a marketing message than a trend.
"Illuminated", the bright highlighter yellow colour, is the light at the end of the tunnel, the sun rising over a dark landscape, the dawning of hope that comes with the possibility of a vaccine.
But more than anything else, we are looking for a return of normalcy.
