Bathroom Bliss

Updated: Jul 5, 2022

The right combination of textures has the ability to make a bathroom look luxurious. Play with colour, opposites do attract. A monochromatic colour palette of black and white is one of the most successful combo's to create extra drama to any room. Of course you can create that too with softer hues like charcoal and beige (Travertine) like shown in picture.

But how to create a polished, functional space?

Building or renovating a bathroom is no small feat, with lots to consider when it comes to selecting fixtures, surface materials, cabinetry, and electrical and plumbing needs—it's crucial to plan well and consider how you and your family will use the space based on individual needs.

The 3 most important factors when you design a bathroom are appearance, practicality, and durability.

Consider the following suggestions.

Allow the Layout to Create a Sense of Calm

Make sure to allocate enough space for each functional area.

If you want a freestanding bathtub but don't have enough space for it, the tub will look hemmed in, and the aesthetics of the room will suffer. Also, avoid making the toilet the focal point of the bathroom; let a vanity or freestanding tub be the first piece you see when you enter the room.

Lots of space.

A bathroom that’s as spacious as this one is inevitably luxurious, regardless of its design. But there’s more to this than just square footage. A bathroom can create the illusion of space by being minimalist and employing strategic features.

Install Adequate Lighting

There are two ways in which light can effect the overall ambiance and the look of a bathroom. On one hand, lots of light in the bathroom can be a luxury. On the other hand, subtle, accent lighting used strategically in the room can also have a similar effect.Good lighting is an essential part of a practical bathroom. Ensure that task lighting and mirror lighting is correctly placed to avoid throwing shadows. Mood lighting is a great way to create a more relaxing atmosphere.

Contrasting Textures

The right combination of textures has the ability to make a bathroom look luxurious. Play with colour, opposites do attract. A monochromatic colour palette of black and white is one of the most succesfull combo's to create extra drama to any room. Of course you can create that too with softer hues like charcoal and beige (Travertine) like shown in picture.

When choosing similar toned tiles for walls and flooring, then create a pattern with your floor tile to add a wow factor.

Choose Low-Maintenance Materials

Durable and easy-to-maintain materials, such as porcelain and reconstituted stone, is your best bet for bathroom surfaces. Natural stone looks great, but because it's porous, it requires more sealing, and is more challenging to maintain over time.

Don't Skimp on Waterproofing, Electricity, and Plumbing

Use a licensed waterproofing and caulking company and work with licensed plumbers and electricians to ensure that your plans will work safely and well as repairs are costly.

Your bathroom should be your private sanctuary. So create your little haven where you wind down at the end of a day, have a glass and bathe away.
